Sabbatical Leave in AUS – 2024-2026

20/6/2026

I am returning to Jordan, my beloved homeland, after two years of sabbatical leave from the University of Jordan, which I spent at the American University of Sharjah in the sisterly United Arab Emirates.

I return to my family, friends, and colleagues in Jordan and at the University of Jordan, looking forward to resuming my work in teaching, research, and development, and to continuing my interaction with my valued colleagues and wonderful students.

During my sabbatical, I had the pleasure of teaching courses in computer engineering and artificial intelligence, supervising senior design projects, and working on two major research directions in Arabic natural language processing: converting colloquial Arabic into Modern Standard Arabic and adding diacritics to Arabic poetry.

The American University of Sharjah has been a truly outstanding experience. It is a remarkable university located in the beautiful University City, with a strong international standing, excellent students, and a professional, supportive, and friendly working environment. I leave AUS with wonderful memories and dear friends.

Our stay in the United Arab Emirates was also a rich and enjoyable experience for my family and me. The UAE is a highly developed and well-organized country that warmly welcomes expatriates and offers outstanding museums, parks, attractions, markets, and restaurants. It is a place where one feels safe, comfortable, and respected.

I leave the UAE grateful for this valuable experience and return to Jordan with renewed enthusiasm to continue contributing and serving.
